A new article published in the Global Pediatric Health discussed the relationship between fructose tolerance and the development of constipation, based on a literature review and single-center experience. The article elaborated on a literature review of constipation and fructose ingestion performed using PubMed. The review enrolled 367 patients who underwent the fructose breath hydrogen test (FBHT). It was observed that among these, 208 patients had fructose intolerance. While clinical presentations included chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation, emesis, and nausea. Chronic constipation, emesis, and nausea were found to be statistically significant and were less likely to be found in FBHT-positive patients. Therefore, it was stated that fructose intolerance may help resolve symptoms in patients with chronic functional constipation.
